April 2011

I’m always experimenting with different styles and techniques, usually on my personal images until I get a look that I like. Some of the time, I start out going for a specific look, but many times it happens by accident. That was the case with the first of the following two images, the second was my attempt to achieve the same look. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated! Click on images for larger view.

I’ve also added two new portraits to the Children’s gallery page. (Click on Children gallery at the top of the page)

Small Business Saturday is here!

Let It Snow!

I ran across this image from a couple of years ago, and with the weather in Nashville this week, I thought it was appropriate. I can’t seem to find the original photo that this was created from, but I’m showing a “before” that was similar. Another “fun” image accomplished with Photoshop and Corel Painter.

It turned out great printed on heavy textured watercolor paper.

Happy Holidays

I’ve been busy with holiday portrait commissions and orders for photographers for the last few months, but I will be adding  images on a more regular basis in the coming weeks. One portrait in particular I was very happy to create this year was a Christmas gift for the parents of three sisters, who had lost their oldest daughter unexpectedly not too long ago.

They had not had any pictures made of the three of them together, so this portrait was based on three individual snapshots, with different lighting and sizes.

I was especially close with the sister who passed away for several years of my childhood, and I was happy to be contacted by one of her sisters to create the portrait for them to present to their parents on Christmas.

I hope they enjoy their portrait as much as I enjoyed creating it for them.

The final image is 11×14 on canvas hand painted with oils.

On a more whimsical note, here is an example of a fun mixed media painting created from a snapshot. This was another Christmas gift, given to the mother by the baby’s grandmother. The hat she was wearing called for something fun, and her grandmother suggested a garden theme. So a few butterflies and some fairy dust transformed a snapshot into a fairytale.

But of course those big blue eyes and perfect smile are the best part!

A Grandpa’s Joy

This image was taken at a baby’s first birthday party,  getting cleaned up by his grandfather, after the traditional “making a mess with the cake”.

I thought it was such a sweet moment between a child and his obviously adoring grandpa.

I wanted this image to have a softer feel than my usual oil painting inspired portraits, so I used a mix of watercolor brushes and chalks in Corel Painter, and printed on textured watercolor paper.

I’m still experimenting with the look at this point, so all comments and critique are welcome.

Before and After – Angel in the Pond

2in Gallery Wrap_pondangel

Please excuse the unimaginative title, I’m open to suggestions. This was painted in Corel Painter from the before photo seen in the upper right corner. It was a snapshot showing progression of a fish pond that my brother is building at his house. The gallery wrap and the heavy canvas texture is a Photoshop action for web display only.  I plan on having this printed on a more linen-like textured canvas with some actual oil or acrylic embellishments added.

Fall is coming!

The “fall like” temperatures the last couple of days have been a nice break from the heat. I’m so looking forward to those few weeks when the colors are at their peak. Here’s an image taken last year of the view from by backyard. Those of you who live nearby will notice that I gave my barn a bit of a makeover. New repairs and paint job coming soon!
